Temporal Sampling

Frames vs Playback Time: How Video Extraction Operates

A digital video stream is a chronological sequence of still image frames displayed at high speed (typically 24, 30, or 60 frames per second). Extracting frames translates temporal video playback back into standalone, discrete raster images.

Rather than extracting thousands of redundant contiguous frames that consume hundreds of megabytes, ScanPDF uses intelligent interval sampling. For instance, an interval of 5 seconds captures exactly one representative frame every 5 seconds, providing a clear visual timeline of key scenes without bloating archive size.

Format Guide: JPG vs PNG vs Animated GIF

JPG Frames (ZIP Archive): High-quality lossy compression (-q:v 2) yielding compact file sizes. Best suited for photo-realistic scenes, action snapshots, and large image sets.
PNG Frames (ZIP Archive): Lossless raster format preserving crisp lines, subtitles, text graphics, and pixel-exact precision without DCT compression artifacts.
Animated GIF (Single Clip): Generates a single animated GIF loop of the selected range using two-pass Lancaster scaling and a custom 256-color palette (sierra2_4a dithering).

Time Range Mechanics

Precise Keyframe Seeking: FFmpeg seeks to the exact start timestamp (-ss [seconds]) before demuxing frames, guaranteeing extraction begins precisely where you specified.

Strict Boundary Validation: ScanPDF validates that the start time is strictly non-negative, does not exceed video duration, and is smaller than the end time. Malformed or inverted bounds are intercepted before FFmpeg execution.

Automatic Interval Balancing: When set to "Auto", ScanPDF divides your active duration by the chosen maximum count with a practical floor of 0.5s, delivering evenly distributed frames across the target window.

Time Range Targeting

Custom Ranges & Isolated Scene Extraction

Full-video extraction is ideal for brief clips or trailers. For lengthy recordings, conference talks, or gameplay recordings, you often only need snapshots from a specific 15-second or 1-minute highlight.

By switching to "Custom Range", you can specify arbitrary start and end timestamps. ScanPDF crops the extraction timeline to that exact segment, extracting only the relevant frames and skipping all unneeded video segments.
