Technical Architecture: RTF to MOBI

Understanding legacy MOBI container specifications and reflowable paragraph extraction.

Legacy MOBI Compatibility

MOBI is a legacy PalmDOC database format originally engineered by Mobipocket and utilized by older 1st through 4th generation Amazon Kindle devices. While modern Kindles prioritize AZW3 and EPUB, legacy MOBI remains essential for vintage hardware, legacy firmware, and specialized reader applications.

Formatting Limitations & Text Extraction

The conversion pipeline utilizes striprtf and semantic paragraph reconstruction. While body text, heading flow, and Unicode characters are preserved faithfully, desktop word processor artifacts such as multi-column desktop tables, drawing canvases, macros, and embedded OLE objects are omitted to meet e-reader specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which e-readers require or support MOBI files?

MOBI files are natively supported by older Amazon Kindle hardware (Kindle Keyboard, Kindle Touch, Kindle DX), legacy Mobipocket e-readers, and reading software such as FBReader, Cool Reader, and Calibre.

Can I send MOBI files through "Send to Kindle"?

Amazon recently deprecated MOBI delivery for its email-based "Send to Kindle" service in favor of EPUB. For modern Kindles, we recommend our RTF to EPUB or RTF to AZW3 tools. For USB sideloading on older Kindles, MOBI works seamlessly.

Does ScanPDF retain any copy of my uploaded manuscript?

No. ScanPDF strictly implements zero persistent storage. Your uploaded RTF file and the generated MOBI e-book exist only in an isolated temporary directory during conversion and are automatically purged once downloaded.
