How to Convert PDF to RTF

Convert fixed PDF pages into an editable text document in three clear steps.

1

Upload Source PDF

Choose any digital PDF up to 100MB. The engine reads text spans, paragraph blocks, and page demarcations.

2

Structure & Unicode Encoding

PyMuPDF extracts text in natural vertical reading order, preserving paragraph breaks and escaping special Unicode characters into valid RTF syntax.

3

Download .RTF File

Instantly download your clean RTF document. Open and edit in Microsoft Word, WordPad, Apple Pages, or LibreOffice Writer.

Understanding PDF to RTF Extraction

Transparent technical capabilities and formatting boundaries when moving from print-ready PDF to Rich Text.

Text Reconstruction & Reading Order

PDF files do not store semantic paragraphs, sentences, or word wraps—they position glyphs at exact 2D coordinates. Our conversion pipeline sorts text blocks vertically and horizontally to restore intuitive reading order. While continuous body copy converts smoothly, highly stylized multi-column newsletters or floating sidebars may flow sequentially.

Formatting Capabilities & Limitations

The generated RTF preserves standard paragraphs, line breaks, page separations, and international Unicode glyphs. However, pixel-perfect print layout, vector drawings, embedded formulas, and complex nested table borders from the PDF are not reconstructed as vector objects in simple RTF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit the generated RTF in Microsoft Word?

Yes. Rich Text Format is supported by virtually all word processors, including Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages, and WordPad.

What happens if my PDF contains scanned images of pages?

If a PDF consists solely of scanned image pages without a searchable text layer, the converter will identify that no embedded digital text exists. Scanned files require Optical Character Recognition (OCR) before editable RTF text can be extracted.

Are files permanently stored on the ScanPDF server?

No. ScanPDF strictly operates on zero persistent storage. Your upload and output are kept only during the active conversion session and immediately cleaned up.
